British Values at Eythorne Elvington Primary School
At Eythorne Elvington, we are proud to promote and uphold the core British Values of:
- Democracy
- The Rule of Law
- Individual Liberty
- Mutual Respect
- Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
These values are at the heart of everything we do and are woven throughout our curriculum. They are taught explicitly in PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Emotional Education) and RE (Religious Education) lessons, as well as through daily school life, assemblies, and special events. We regularly update our audit of activities that support and celebrate these values.
Democracy
Democracy is a key part of life at our school. Pupils are encouraged to share their views and ideas, and they know their voices will be heard.
Our School Council, elected entirely by pupils, gives children the opportunity to influence real changes in school. The elections for School Council members and Team Captains reflect our British electoral system—giving pupils first-hand experience of democracy in action. We also gather pupil feedback through discussions and questionnaires to ensure every child feels valued.
The Rule of Law
Our pupils learn the importance of laws and rules—whether in the classroom, the school, or the wider community. They understand that rules help to keep everyone safe and happy.
Through assemblies, lessons, and visits from the Police and Fire Service, children explore why laws exist, how they protect us, and what happens when they are broken. They also learn to take responsibility for their own actions.
Individual Liberty
At Eythorne Elvington, we encourage our pupils to make choices and express themselves with confidence, within a safe and supportive environment.
Children are taught to understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms safely—such as through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons. Whether choosing their learning challenge, deciding how to present their work, or joining one of our many clubs, pupils learn that their choices matter and their opinions count.
Mutual Respect
Respect is a cornerstone of our school community. We teach children that their actions affect others and that everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and courtesy.
All members of our school—pupils, staff, parents, and visitors—are expected to show respect for one another and for our environment. It’s part of who we are and what we stand for.
Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
Although our local area is not highly diverse, we actively celebrate and learn about different cultures, faiths, and traditions.
Assemblies, RE lessons, and special events introduce pupils to a wide range of beliefs and celebrations. Visitors from different backgrounds are invited to share their experiences, and children enjoy visiting places of worship to deepen their understanding.
We are committed to preparing our pupils to live in a diverse world, where everyone’s beliefs are valued and respected.
Our Commitment
At Eythorne Elvington, we will always challenge any opinions or behaviours—by pupils, staff, or parents—that go against fundamental British Values or promote extremism.
We believe that by embedding these values in all aspects of school life, we are helping our children grow into kind, respectful, and responsible citizens of the future.
