Following the enactment of the Children and Families Act 2014, the Department for Education issued Guidance on supporting pupils at school with medical conditions.
Healthcare plans are put place for pupils who have a diagnosed and
assessed chronic medical condition which require personalised intervention from
the staff at school during the school day, implemented in accordance with the
details of the plan. Parents will have a key role to play in drawing up and
signing off a new Healthcare plan. A
Healthcare plan may also be issued to highlight a medical condition that school
needs to be aware of even if there is not usually the need for daily
intervention.
Where
a child has a specific medical condition such as diabetes, allergies which
require Epipens, epilepsy, training will be arranged for all staff working
directly with the child and this will be renewed every year as the child moves
to a new class.
